Surgery Patient Guide

Pre-operative and post-operative instructions to help you prepare and recover.

If you are scheduled for oral surgery at South Austin Dental (whether a tooth extraction, dental implant placement, bone grafting, or wisdom tooth removal), the following instructions will help you prepare and recover.

Before Your Surgery

  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first few hours after surgery.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before your procedure if sedation is planned.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up easily.
  • Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and nail polish before arriving.
  • Take any pre-operative medications as directed by Dr. Hauser or Dr. Marino.
  • If you are taking blood thinners or other medications, confirm with your doctor whether to adjust your dose before surgery.

After Your Surgery

  • Bite gently on the gauze pad placed over the surgical site for 30-45 minutes. Replace as needed.
  • Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods for the first 2-3 days. Avoid hot liquids, straws, and carbonated drinks.
  • Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw for the first 24 hours. After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water.
  • Take prescribed medications as directed.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 48-72 hours after surgery.
  • Call us at (512) 441-8922 if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, fever, or signs of infection.
