Inlays and Onlays
Austin, TX

Woman smiling after getting inlays and onlays at South Austin Dental in Austin, TXThe team at South Austin Dental are experts in dental inlays and onlays. These are associated with tooth cavities and fillings. When your tooth has been damaged either by getting hit or by cavities, you can either have it washed up and filled up or inserted with an inlay or onlay. Inlays are used when the tooth has been slightly damaged. Onlays are used when damage has been caused to the cusps. Our team can also remove existing fillings in your teeth and replace them with an inlay or onlay.

Prosthetic Dentistry

Inlays and onlays are prosthetics just like crowns and bridges, only they are small and are fitted within the tooth. You do not have to remove a damaged tooth if it is not completely damaged. We will administer a local anesthetic for you and extract the cavity. The tooth will also be drilled to properly shape it for the inlay or onlay. An impression of the piece your tooth needs will be taken to the lab, and it will be made for you.

Inlays and onlays are made of either porcelain or ceramic. They are made in the perfect shape to fit in the space left in your tooth, and then fitted and cemented. onlays are used when the cusps and biting surface of your tooth have been completely damaged. Onlays are large and are designed with the exact top shape of the respective tooth that needs to be mended.

After the preparation procedure, a temporary onlay/inlay will be made for your teeth as you wait for your permanent piece to be completed. Once completed, the temporary one is removed and the permanent piece is fixed in place.

Natural Feel

There is no point of having an onlay on a tooth that is loose. It’d be better to have the tooth extracted and replaced with a bridge. Visit our office, and we will be able to advise on what your best options are.

Inlays and Onlays are fitted on your natural tooth, so you will hardly notice a difference once healed. You might feel a little pinch as a result of the drilling during the procedure though. It should not last long though. The tooth remains quite strong and feels natural. Do not use it to bite or chew hard stuff. If the discomfort after the procedure persists, come back to the clinic and get checked.

It is important that you visit us when you have a damaged tooth so that we can examine it and recommend the perfect remedy. We will fit the best Inlays or Onlays on your tooth, and ensure it does not decay anymore and it remains strong. Inlays and Onlays are a way of preserving the natural feel of your tooth, even after it has been damaged.
